Nancy D.

My Massive Type 1 Meningioma [brain tumour] was diagnosed when I was 70 years old, having been growing for over half my life. By 2019 it was the size of a large grapefruit. My tumour had been growing for over 40 years. I had 80% removed with the remaining 20% deemed inoperable…hence, I still have a brain tumour. I had been treated (for two years) for Parkinson’s Disease as I was displaying many of the symptoms.

What are some things that have helped you throughout your recovery journey?

The NS Rehabilitation Centre was where I learned about tumours and recovery. I have also learned much from reputable websites regarding Type 1 Meningiomas. I learned about ABIs and TBIs and the similarities of their recovery process. I’ve also learned from reputable brain injury websites and personal stories of recovery.

What would you like people who don’t have a brain injury to know?

There needs to be awareness of the brain injury recovery journey, especially how it affects family and friends. Having people understand side effects of brain injury like headaches, fatigue, irritability and clumsiness, especially when the healing energy required is depleted. A brain injury is not ‘the end’ but a ‘new beginning’.
